About the Holiday
Coast Guard Day celebrates the organization founded by Alexander Hamilton and originally called the Revenue Cutter Service on August 4, 1790. The United States Coast Guard lays claim to being the country's oldest continuous seagoing service. Today's Coast Guard now boasts approximately 46,000 men and women on active duty, 8,100 reservists, 7,000 full time civilian employees and 30,000 auxiliarists. As a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, coast guardsmen are deployed every day in a mission to protect the public, the environment, and US economic and security interests in any maritime region.[1]
