About the Holiday
National Dance Day was created by So You Think You Can Dance producer Nigel Lythgoe. It was founded and officially recognized in 2010 by American congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton to encourage Americans to promote dance as a fun way to promote good health, physical fitness, and to fight obesity. Below is a list of some noteworthy popular dance moves:
- Michael Jackson's Moonwalk (1983)
- Madonna's Vogue dance (1990)
- Billy Ray Cyrus Achy Breaky Heart (1992)
- The Macarena (1994)
- Cha Cha Slide (2000)
- The Crank by Soulja Boy (2007)
- Shuffling by LMFAO (2011)
