About the Holiday

National Tap Dance Day honors this unique American art form of dance. This holiday was signed into law by President George Bush on November 7, 1989. May 25th was picked because that is the birth date of the late great tap dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson born in 1878. Other famous tap dancers include Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Gregory Hines, Paul Draper, and Sammy Davis Jr. Encyclopedia Britannica (Britannica.com) states "Tap originated in the United States through the fusion of several ethnic percussive dances, primarily African tribal dances and Scottish, Irish, and English clog dances, hornpipes, and jigs."
