National Fig Newton Day celebrates this fig bar/fig roll type of cookie that has a fig jam in the middle surrounded by a soft crumbly crust. It was created by the Kennedy Biscuit Works now known as Nabisco. Charles M. Roser, a cookie maker born in Ohio, created the recipe and sold it to Kennedy Biscuit works. He created the machine that was used to created them in mass in 1891 and got it patented in 1892. The original products were called "Newtons" named after the small town outside of Boston called Newton, Massachusetts.
