About the Holiday
National Pumpkin Day celebrates this fruit whose name comes from the Greek word "pepon" which means large melon. Pumpkins contain vitamins A, C, and E, as well as potassium, beta-carotene, antioxidants, and fiber so they are very healthy to eat. The United States produces 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins a year. The largest pumpkin in history was produced by Ron Wallace from Greene, RI and weighed 2,009 pounds. A pumpkin with a face carved out of it is referred to as a jack o'lantern.
