About the Holiday
Mid-July is the perfect time of year for Pick Blueberries Day. Some sources say this holiday is July 10th while others July 14th. We went with the one more in the middle of the month.
The easiest way to pick blueberries is to hold a bucket in one hand and grab a branch of blueberries with the other. Gently rub the blueberries. The ripe ones will fall into your bucket while the unripe ones will stay attached to the branch. Find a local farmer that has blueberries and support them. If you cannot locate one perhaps find a local farmers market and buy them there.
Blueberries are native to the Americas. Early native Americans referred to them as “star berries” because of the perfect 5 pointed star at the end of the blossom. Maine produces more blueberries than any other state. Blueberries have the highest antioxidants of all fruits and vegetables, can improve memory, are packed with vitamin C and fiber, can reduce the risk of heart attack and heart failure, help stop the degradation of the skin's collagen, can improve brain function, may combat the start and/or progression of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, is helpful in combating colon, liver and ovarian cancer, and have low glycemic level.
