About the Holiday
National Blueberry Pie Day celebrates this sweet pie that can be made with fresh, frozen, or canned blueberries. Often accompanied with vanilla ice cream, blueberry season begins in May and ends in late summer. Blueberries are native to the Americas. Early native Americans referred to them as “star berries” because of the perfect 5 pointed star at the end of the blossom. Maine produces more blueberries than any other state.
Blueberries have the highest antioxidants of all fruits and vegetables, can improve memory, are packed with vitamin C and fiber, can reduce the risk of heart attack and heart failure, help stop the degradation of the skin's collagen, can improve brain function, may combat the start and/or progression of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, is helpful in combating colon, liver and ovarian cancer, and have low glycemic level.
