About the Holiday
TV Dinner Day marks the anniversary of the first TV dinner on this day in 1954. An executive from C.A. Swanson & Sons, Gerald Thomas, marketed the first TV dinner after he got the idea from the trays airlines served food on. The first TV dinner Swanson sold cost 98 cents and consisted of turkey, cornbread dressing, sweet potatoes, and peas all in separate compartments in an aluminum tray shaped like a TV (which was a new craze in the 1950s). TV dinners now may be microwaved, but back then had to be cooked in an oven. Desserts were not added until 1960.
Other early day TV dinner varieties included Salisbury steak, meatloaf, and fried chicken. Besides Swanson, other popular TV dinner brands include Banquet, Boston Market, Healthy Choice, Hungry Man, Kid Cuisine, Lean Cuisine, Marie Callender, and Smart Ones.
