About the Holiday
World Television Day recognizes the impact that TV has on decision-making through its ability to alert the masses to issues that are going on throughout the world. The increased visibility that TV provides can be a force of good by bringing attention, and providing pressure, to help resolve unjust situations and to enhance mutual cooperation.
This observance was created by the United Nations on December 17th, 1996 and first celebrated in 1997. The UN created this holiday not with the intent to celebrate the TV as a tool, but rather as "a symbol for communication and globalization in the contemporary world."
