About the Holiday
The Day the Music Died Day is a day in memory of the death of three American musicians -- Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Jiles Perry Richardson. While on "The Winter Dance Party" tour, logistical issues and tour bus problems prompted some band members to charter a small plane to their next venue. On February 3, 1959 the small plane crashed near Iowa, killing all on board.
Don McLean's American Pie, a tribute song about the crash, called this day, "The Day the Music Died".
