About the Holiday
Victoria Day is a Canadian holiday that celebrates Queen Victoria's birthday. She was born on May 24, 1819. Canadians celebrate the holiday on the Monday preceding May 24. It is a statutory holiday throughout all of Canada except the Atlantic provinces and marks the end of the winter and the unofficial start of the spring or summer season.
Queen Victoria served as queen of Great Britain from 1837 until her death in 1901, and as empress of India from 1876. She was only 18 when she took over the throne. To this day she is still the longest-reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Her head was on the earliest postage stamp in the world. The stamp was called the Penny Black of the United Kingdom and was first used on May 6, 1840.
