About the Holiday
The Write to Your Fathers Day holiday provides a conveniently timed reminder to get your Father's Day card picked out and in the mail. It also reminds us that we should write something in the card. Though, greeting cards are cleverly written to express many different sentiments on your behalf, nothing takes the place of a personal note from you on the inside -- whether it be a sentimental thank you, or telling him something funny that happened to you recently.
This holiday originated in 2006 due to three poets who lived in San Luis Obispo, California. Their motivation was that 70% of U.S. prisoners grew up with no father. As poets, they saw how poets used few words to get to the essence of a matter and thought that writing a brief note to Dads would be a good thing. They encourage a brief, handwritten note to all fathers, whether they are still alive, or not.[1]
