About the Holiday
Zipper Day marks the day in 1913 when the zipper was patented in the United States thanks to Swedish born electrical engineer, Gideon Sundback. The B F Goodrich Company first coined the word "zipper" when they decided to use Gideon's device on a new type of rubber boots or galoshes. The largest manufacturer of zippers is Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha in Japan, which is why you often see YKK on zippers. The History of the Zipper includes the original 1917 Sundback patent for the "Separable Fastener".
