About the Holiday
International Credit Union Day, or ICU Day pays tribute to the financial cooperative and the economic and social benefits it provides to local communities. The theme for 2011 is "Credit Unions Build a Better World".
Originally, this holiday was started on January 17th, 1927, by the Credit Union of Massachusetts where the date chosen was Benjamin Franklin's birthday as he was known as "Apostle of Thrift". The holiday didn't take hold and was later relaunched by U.S. Credit Union National Association (CUNA) in 1948. For more information on the holiday and setting up a local event, visit the CUNA website.[1]
