About the Holiday
International Literacy Day was founded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and was first observed on September 8, 1967. The goal of this holiday is to promote education and literacy worldwide. Merriam-Webster.com defines literacy as "the ability to read and write". Low literacy rates often take a toll on a city's (or country's) economy due to a decrease of productivity in the work force, increase in crime, and loss of tax revenue. People with low literacy rates often live in poverty, receive government assistance, are more likely get involved in crime, and may have poor health.
