About the Holiday
National Bologna Day celebrates this lunch meat that was made popular in the U.S. thanks to Oscar Meyer's catchy jingle...
- My bologna has a first name, it's O S C A R.
- My bologna has a second name it's M A Y E R.
- Oh I love to eat it every day and if you ask me why I’ll say...
- ...cause Oscar Mayer has a way with B O L O G N A.
Bologna is a sausage made of finely ground meat (beef, pork, chicken, turkey, or a mixture of these) blended with fat, salt, and spices and served in round slices. It's already cooked so you can eat it out of the bag. The most popular way to eat it is as a sandwich with yellow mustard. Often people fry their bologna before eating it.
Bologna is sometimes spelled baloney (as it is pronounced) and is similar to Italian mortadella (a finely hashed/ground port sausage) that originated in Bologna, Italy.
