About the Holiday
On National Hoagie Day, we celebrate a type of sandwich often called a hoagie but, depending on where you live, may be called a submarine, hero, grinder, or torpedo. It is basically an over sized cold cut and cheese sandwich. Hoagies are typically made with a long crusty piece of Italian or French bread cut lengthwise and filled with meat and cheese and often accompanied with lettuce, tomato, onion, peppers, and/or sauce. It's said that the hoagie was originally created in Philadelphia.
