About the Holiday
National Peanut Butter Cookie Day celebrates cookies that have been popular since the early 1900s thanks to George Washington Carver. Carver's many titles included botanist, scientist, agricultural researcher, and agricultural chemist. In 1916 he wrote a research bulletin "How to Grow the Peanut and 105 Ways of Preparing it for Human Consumption". One of the recipes was for making peanut butter cookies using chopped up or crushed peanuts.
The famous criss-cross on the top is used by dipping a fork in water or sugar and helps flatten the cookies for better cooking. It is said that 90% of U.S. households have peanut butter in their pantries.
