About the Holiday
National Pears Helene Day celebrates this delectable French dessert that was created by French chef Auguste Escoffier in around 1864. Sometimes called Pears Belle Helene or Poire belle Hélène it was named after the opera La belle Hélène by Jacques Offenbach. These poached pears are usually infused with cinnamon and covered in chocolate often served with vanilla ice cream, vanilla syrup, sliced almonds, or crystallized violets.
Pears belong to the apple family. In The Odyssey by the Greek poet Homer, pears are referred to as "gift of the gods."
