About the Holiday
National Sense of Smell Day celebrates one of the five senses and is sponsored by the Sense of Smell Institute in an effort to educate people on how the sense of smell works and the important role it can play in your life. The sense of smell can make you feel good, relaxed, sense danger, improve your mood, help you be more alert, and help you sleep. According to the book Molecular Biology of the Cell: "Humans can distinguish more than 10,000 different smells (odorants), which are detected by specialized olfactory receptor neurons lining the nose.... It is thought that there are hundreds of different olfactory receptors, each encoded by a different gene and each recognizing different odorants."
The human nose is the main organ for smell and taste. Dog's noses are one hundred million times more sensitive than humans. Dogs with the most keen sense of smell include the Beagle, Basset, and the Bloodhound.
