Patriots' Day commemorates the opening battles of the American Revolutionary War which which occurred with the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. This holiday is observed in Massachusetts, Maine and is a public school holiday in Wisconsin. The Boston Marathon is run on this day and the Red Sox schedule a home game. The famous phrase by Ralph Waldo Emerson "Shot Heard 'Round the World" refers to this first armed battle between the British and colonial militiamen.
