About the Holiday
Space Day began as a one time event by Lockheed Martin in 1997 to get people interested in space exploration with the ultimate goal of promoting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). With the popularity of the one time event, Space Day became an annual holiday celebrated on the first Friday of May. In 2001, Senator and former astronaut John Glenn expanded the scope of this holiday to International Space Day.
