About the Holiday
Red Planet Day celebrates the planet Mars - our solar system neighbor, the fourth planet from the sun. November 28th, 1964 commemorates the launch of Mariner 4 which was the first spacecraft to obtain and transmit images of Mars. Mars has a reddish color because of iron in the soil. It was named after the ancient Roman god of war. Mars has the tallest volcano in our solar system named Olympus Mons which is 3x the height of Mount Everest.
