About the Holiday
Palm Sunday is Christian holy day that commemorates Jesus' arrival into Jerusalem a week before his resurrection. The palm symbolism comes from when Jesus entered the city on a donkey. The Gospel of John said that people greeted his arrival by waving palm branches and laying them down to carpet his path. In the Bible and in Jewish tradition, the palm branch symbolizes triumph and victory. Palm Sunday is celebrated in many Christian churches by the distribution of palm leaves to the parishioners -- many times these are made, or woven, into crosses.
