About the Holiday
It was on this day in 1920 that women in the United States were first given the right to vote by the signing of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. In 1971, Congresswoman Bella Abzug instituted a joint resolution that would henceforth proclaim this day, Women's Equality Day. The President of the United States is authorized and requested each August 26th to issue an annual proclamation.
